Rewards: S.T.A.R.S. Program
  1. A large colorful poster is made with each classroom teachers name and a graph or chart following this to keep track of the STARS points. At the bottom of the poster are the five targeted behaviors:

    S - Staying on task
    T - Trying your best
    A - Active listening
R - Respecting self, others and equipment
    S - Sportsmanship and responsibility

  2. The word STARS is written on the board for each class. If, as a class, the students are not exhibiting one of the behaviors one letter is erased. If they correct that behavior during that class period they may earn the letter back. At the end of class the number of letters they have left is the number of STARS points they earn that day.

  3. These are recorded on the STARS chart. Once the points reach a predeterminged goal, the class earns a privelege.(i.e.: extra Physical Education class, piece of playground equipment for their class, class celebration, etc. ). This may also act as a reward contest between classes.

  4. Some days are double STARS days, usually when there is a substitute. This really makes things easier for the substitute teacher.

  5. Assessment Ideas:

Watch and listen for students exhibiting the desired behaviors and reminding classmates of the desired behaviors. Compare points one quarter to the next.

Rewards and Consequences

When it comes to developing rewards and consequences for my classroom, I must first get to a better understanding of the students and their backgrounds to create effective rewards and consequences for my gym room. It is important to keep in mind as the instructor that each individual student was brought up in an enviornment that my own and must be understanding and patient when dealing with students and implementing the rewards and consequences.  The rewards and consequences with be in a way for all students to understand while keeping the students structured and push them to behave appropriately while in thier gym period. Disruptuon of learning for the other students will not be tolerated and excellent behavior will be award promptly and often. It will be made clear to the students that positive behavior will be recognized and reinforced when seen. Charts or rules and consequences will be displayed in more than one area of the gym printed in big, visually stimulating font in order for students to identify them at a glance.

The Purpose of this website is to show school administrators my qualifications as an educator, allow them to get to know me on a personal level as well as an educator, and to creatively entice students and members of the community to pursue Physical Education far past the classroom and into their own lives.
